If you’re a diligent Lower Shore Land Trust newsletter reader, it’s likely that you’ve heard the term “CORE Plans” pretty frequently over the past few months. CORE stands for Conservation and Resilience, which are the two primary objectives of these newly developed management plans available to LSLT easement landowners in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.

In partnership with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources under the Roots for Resilience Initiative, LSLT has been working diligently to research and compile a variety of nature-based conservation projects that help combat the flooding, soil salinity, and shoreline erosion that is anticipated to increase in coming years. These strategies focus on a variety of land types, from farmland to residential structures to marshes to forests, and beyond, these plans are designed to protect entire properties and form networks of conserved land in order to increase the impact of each individual project.

In addition to providing potential projects that align with landowner goals, these plans also list programs and organizations with funding to help provide technical and financial support for landowners looking to improve their land. The plans include specific program names as well as local contacts to make getting involved faster and easier for interested landowners.

Prior to the creation of each plan, LSLT staff sit down with landowners to discuss what their goals are for their property as well as any observed early signs of flooding, erosion, or salt intrusion. During this conversation staff gain a comprehensive understanding of what matters to each landowner, which we can then use to create a more useful and personalized plan.
