This year's Flannel Formal will include a special recognition as Lower Shore Land Trust honors John Groutt with the 2026 Stephen N. Parker Conservation Legacy Award.

Established in memory of renowned conservationist Stephen N. Parker, the award recognizes an individual or organization whose dedication to conserving the vital lands of the Lower Eastern Shore has made a lasting difference. Steve Parker is remembered for his work as Director of The Nature Conservancy's Virginia Coast Reserve and as a longtime board member of Citizens for a Better Eastern Shore. With a background in both business and nonprofit work, Steve understood the importance of bringing together economic development and conservation, recognizing that healthy, productive landscapes and thriving communities go hand in hand.

The award carries that same spirit forward by recognizing those who have made distinct and lasting contributions to private land conservation on the Lower Shore.

This year, that recognition goes to John Groutt.

John has spent years giving his time and energy to the Lower Shore, bringing people together around the places and natural resources that make this area special. Through his volunteer work with Wicomico Environmental Trust and leadership with Friends of the Nanticoke River, he has played an important role in local conservation efforts, from conserving the rural landscape to improving water quality throughout the region.

His commitment to the community extends well beyond environmental work. For 27 years, John served as director of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore's Upward Bound program, dedicating his career to education and creating opportunities for students.

Through his volunteer service, leadership, and dedication to education, John has demonstrated what it means to invest in the Lower Shore and its people. We are proud to recognize his contributions with an award that celebrates the lasting impact one person's commitment to conservation can have on a community.

We look forward to celebrating John at this year's Flannel Formal on Saturday, November 7, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Bordeleau Vineyard & Winery in Eden!
