Discover the Chesapeake Forest Tract: Diversity and Successional Growth
Whether you're already a regular visitor or have yet to discover this remarkable property, the Libertytown Branch/ Chesapeake Forest Tract owned by Maryland's Department of Natural Resources offers exceptional opportunities for outdoor recreation and wildlife observation.
This 674.5-acre tract showcases an impressive variety of habitats and terrain. Visitors can explore ponds, seasonal ephemeral wetland pools, expansive grassland meadows, and mature forests featuring bald cypress, pines, and stately oaks. The diverse ecosystem supports an abundance of wildlife throughout the year.
Nature Reclaims the Land
The former Bay Club golf course continues its transformation back to natural habitat. While subtle remnants of the old course remain—overgrown golf carts and sand traps now serve as interesting historical markers—nature is steadily reclaiming the landscape.
During a recent morning walk with DNR forester Alex Clark, we observed the remarkable natural succession taking place. White oaks and persimmons are establishing themselves in previously maintained areas, while thriving stands of milkweed are flourishing, a welcome sight for our migrating Monarch butterflies.
Year-Round Recreation Opportunities

The tract welcomes visitors for various activities throughout the year:
Dog walking on designated trails
Bird watching and wildlife observation
Equestrian trail riding
Seasonal hunting (in accordance with DNR regulations)
LSLT board member Glenn Irwin says “The Bay Club’s close proximity and direct linkage to the town of Berlin is wonderful. I look forward to bringing my grandkids to this restored park to explore its many pathways and views of nature.”
Upcoming Wetland Enhancement Project
This fall, DNR will begin constructing wetland habitat to further enhance the tract's ecological value. While this important conservation work is underway, visitors may encounter construction equipment and earth-moving activities. The project has been carefully planned to minimize impact on the existing trail system that visitors currently enjoy.
We appreciate your patience during this enhancement period, which will ultimately benefit both wildlife and the visitor experience for years to come.

We're excited to announce the formation of a Friends of Libertytown Branch (former Bay Club) group. This volunteer organization will help support conservation efforts and enhance visitor experiences at this special place.
