The landscape of the Lower Shore looked totally different in the early 1900’s. Our small, vibrant communities were full of small business, boats, ships, and agricultural products being produced, processed, and shipped out all over the east coast. However, not many towns have changed as much as Public Landing, Maryland.
Public Landing was once one of those bustling, small towns full of life, a miniature Ocean City so to speak. Located on the Chincoteague Bay, it had a beach area, amusement park, hotel, and many other amenities that tourists want to go to on vacation. As with many places on the Eastern Shore, the Hurricane of 1933 changed the way of life for many folks. Not only did this hurricane geographically create the Ocean City Inlet we know of today, but it also flattened Public Landing.

Today, Public Landing is a beautiful, small Delmarva town. It has a small, public beach, boat ramps, small boardwalk, and roughly 400 ft fishing pier that sticks out into the Chincoteague Bay. There are also two pavilions on each side of the fishing pier that are great for family gatherings, not to mention the little slide off the farthest pavilion. There are always tons of gulls and other saltwater loving birds in the town, gentle waves on the beach, and a nice area to paddleboard and kayak.
If it wasn’t for the Hurricane of 1933, Ocean City and Public Landing may have been flip-flopped. But either way, if you're looking for a nice place to relax, go for a quick paddle, or just go fishing away from the tourist hustle and bustle, check out Public Landing, just over 6 miles east of Snow Hill.
