“These freezing temperatures aren’t here forever”, “Don’t worry, Spring is just around the Corner” - this is what I tell myself in the harsh weather days of January and February. And while we aren’t able to dig in the garden we can plan for a hopeful season brimming with songbirds, bees, butterflies and colorful moths.
Is 2026 the year for your garden make over? Do you have an area on your property you’ve tirelessly mowed and managed and now tree roots are interfering with the mower blade, the soil is compacted and the lawn is sparse? Or are you new to gardening and need guidance on how to begin?
Invite more native plants to be part of the solution. Take a look at how drought tolerant and maintenance minimal our local ecotone native species can be.
Sign up for our Native Plant Design workshop for inspiration. Registration Link Here: LOWER SHORE LAND TRUST - 2026 Native Garden Workshop

Join LSLT staff members Beth Sheppard and Jared Parks along with Master Gardener expert Ginny Rosenkranz as they share tips and techniques for maximizing the ecological benefits of native species. We’ll help you focus on a specific area and make suggestions for layering plants with a mix of trees, shrubs and perennials. We’ll even help you design mini habitat container gardens.
Join Us. Pre-registration is required. We keep the class size small to give more individual attention to your garden project. If there is enough interest, we’ll schedule a second workshop.
Until then, take a look at this wonderful book for ideas and inspiration:
Planting in a Post-Wild World Designing Plant Communities for Resilient Landscapes by Thomas Rainer and Claudia West.
