This week brought an unexpected challenge with the proposed federal spending freeze issued on Monday. Federal funding constitutes approximately one-third of our projected budget for 2025, providing crucial support for our mission to conserve and restore the Lower Shore’s working and natural lands. The potential loss of these funds would have been a major disruption to our work.
While the order to freeze federal spending was ultimately redacted, this moment serves as a stark reminder that unforeseen challenges can disrupt even the best laid plans. It also highlights something far more important—the unwavering strength and resilience of our community.
In the uncertainty that followed, we carefully evaluated our available resources and were reassured to find that we would have been able to maintain our current operations and staffing for several months. This is thanks to the long-term culture of careful planning and financial responsibility by the LSLT staff and board, combined with the generous support from our donors and friends. Our financial reserves, built through years of dedication and generosity, provided us with a necessary buffer, allowing us to continue our work despite potential funding gaps.
The Lower Shore Land Trust is more than an organization; it is a community of individuals and businesses who share a deep love for this region—its landscapes, its culture, and its people. The stability we enjoy today in the face of uncertainty is not just a matter of finances; it is a testament to the dedication and passion of those who believe in our mission. Because of you, LSLT stands strong, healthy, and vibrant.
I want to personally thank each and every one of you who has contributed to making this organization what it is today. Your support ensures that we can continue to protect the lands and waters that make the Lower Shore so unique, even in the face of challenges like these.
As we move forward, we remain vigilant and prepared for any future uncertainties. But one thing we do not question is the strength of our community and the commitment of those who stand with us. Your continued support is what allows us to be proactive, resilient, and effective in our mission. This support is needed now more than ever to ensure LSLT remains in a position of strength to achieve its mission.
On behalf of all of us at the Lower Shore Land Trust, thank you. Thank you for believing in this work, for investing in the future of our landscapes, and for ensuring that, together, we remain a force for conservation on the Lower Shore.
With gratitude,
Matt Heim
