Each month, one of LSLT’s will be highlighting a special

place here on the Lower Shore that they love to

frequent. To kick things off, our Executive Director Matt

Heim would like to share a little bit about Roaring Point

in Wicomico County, MD.

A Place to Get Away: Roaring Point

Sometimes, amidst the busyness of life, you stumble

upon a place that feels like it was made just for

you—a place that quiets your mind and restores your spirit. For me, Roaring Point Park in Wicomico County is one of those places.

I’ve walked the sandy shores of Roaring Point countless times, sometimes alone, sometimes with family, usually with a dog. Each visit feels like an escape—a chance to leave behind the daily grind and immerse myself in nature. The rhythm of the waves lapping at the shore, watching an osprey or eagle overhead, and the vast, beautiful vista where the Nanticoke meets the Chesapeake all work together to create a sense of calm that’s hard to find elsewhere.

One of my favorite things about Roaring Point is it’s a great place to take the kids and four-legged family members. My kids love running along the beach, finding little treasures along the shoreline, and wading into the calm and shallow waters. It’s the perfect place to let them be kids—safe, open, and welcoming.

It’s also a great place to catch a sunset. There’s something transformative about sitting on the shore as the sun dips below the horizon, painting the sky in vivid hues of orange, pink, and gold. No matter what’s on my mind, those sunsets have a way of reminding me what’s truly important.

I also happen to be a history buff, and the icing on the cake for me at Roaring Point is its connection to the Civil War and the struggle to end slavery. Roaring Point was the home to a detachment of Union soldiers during the Civil War that used its strategic location to monitor incoming and outgoing travel to both the Wicomico and Nanticoke Rivers.

I invite you to discover Roaring Point Park for yourself. Take a walk along the shore, bring your family for a day of fun, or simply sit and watch the sunset. I promise, you’ll leave feeling renewed, just as I do every time I visit…so long as the flies aren’t out!
